Autumn Portals
Fact 03 — 叁 The grove

China — Ginkgo · Beauty

The Golden Drop.A year, spent in one hour.

Other trees let autumn go slowly. The ginkgo waits. One hard frost, and it drops everything at once — gold on the ground by morning, the branches bare.

i

The maidenhair leaf

The ginkgo is the only tree in the world with bilobed, fan-shaped leaves. Its parallel, forking veins closely resemble those of the maidenhair fern — which is how it earned its other name, the maidenhair tree.

ii

The synchronized fall

Unlike most deciduous trees, which shed gradually over weeks, the ginkgo is famous for synchronized leaf drop. Following a sharp drop in temperature it will often release all of its brilliant golden-yellow leaves simultaneously — sometimes within just a few hours, laying a stunning circular carpet around its own trunk.

iii

Goethe's two-in-one

The leaf's distinct dual lobe — often split deep down the middle — famously inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In 1815 he wrote the poem “Ginkgo biloba,” using the shape as a romantic metaphor for two becoming one: a celebration of unity, duality, and deep friendship.
